THE decision of mayor Karen Williams and Capalaba MP Don Brown to stop their public brawling is good news for the Redlands.
The pair have fired a few shots at each other about how they each go about getting infrastructure for the district.
Each of them have some points to make but in the big picture, it is best for all if they present a united front.
It can be a bit of a grind for different levels of government to get on and work as an alliance but it has to be done.
Even if they are not politically aligned, our local politicians should do the best they can by taxpayers not by themselves.
They have decided to work together to convince the state and federal governments of the need to extend he Eastern Busway from Coorparoo to Capalaba and Victoria Point.
It’s an important project and will make a tremendous difference to commuters and, indeed, anyone wanting to go to Brisbane.
There also has been good news on another matter, with a crack down on North Stradbroke Island by Redland City Council and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service rangers trapping about a dozen dogs, foxes and a cat.
It might not seem like many animals but once dogs get the taste of blood just one or two can do terrible damage to wildlife or stock in a relatively short time. They will go back night after night in a killing frenzy, just ask a grazier.
A lack of action on the island – despite plenty of complaints – saw a terrible situation develop, with large numbers of wildlife killed and maimed.
Action taken on this issue confirms the point that legislation, bylaws and regulations are not worth the paper they are written on if they are not policed.
Council needs to keep on with this good policing in other areas as well.
It has taken action at Alexandra Hills where dogs are being left to run in the Scribbly Gum Conservation Area as people exercise.
Unfortunately, this action was not so well planned, with a pro forma council letter to nearby homes merely mentioning about dogs being walked off leash in the suburb.
The conservation area where the specific problem is occurring was not even mentioned.
It shows how policing needs to be properly followed through else it becomes a waste of time.
