When Matthew Jones, 36, of Redland Bay had his beard shaved on April 11, he did it in memory of his grandfather.
It was a proud moment that Mr Jones had been robbed of when his grandfather Barry Jones died of leukemia in 2006.
“We were close. We both served in the army and he never got to see me on any of my march outs due to his illness. He loved the fact that I had joined (the army) and I feel proud to do this in his honour,” Mr Jones said.
Mr Jones said he had an extra reason to raise money through Shave for a Cure, with his father-in-law Rod Aylmer, 62, of Thornlands also managing multiple myeloma.
“Anything we can do to fund raise for any form of cancer has to help. I have seen both go through some very tough and painful times, so to be able to raise some money and help out others that will go through this terrible disease is the least I can do. Every bit counts no matter how big or small the donation,” he said.
Through his shave, Mr Jones raised more than $2500 for leukemia research.
The shave was performed at Good Life Cleveland, where he works as a personal trainer. The shave was given by Clippy T’s at Cleveland as part of the fund raising donation and Mr Jones said one of his clients made cup cakes for him to sell.
“It’s very different sitting in a barber’s chair with people looking at you,” he said.
