The next Rotary Club of Capalaba Bookfest on May 4, 5 and 6 will support the rebuilding of the Cleveland scout den, at Ormiston.
The 70-year-old historic building was gutted in March. It was used not only by the scouting association but by various community groups, including Rotary and its regular Bookfest.
Rotary Bookfest coordinatorTony Wills said the building had become a familiar sight for Redland book lovers.
“The Bookfest provides quality reading at bargain-based prices. Our bi-annual Bookfests have become an effective recycling project while supporting youth and literacy projects each year,” Mr Wills said.
Funds raised have helped offset the cost of sending shipping containers of donated goods to South Pacific islanders, primarily to upgrade their schools and hospitals. Books are bought, re-gifted and re-sold, until they reach their use by date and are pulped.
Mr Wills said that while the scout hall was destroyed, the adjoining book shed was untouched.
“There are thousands of quality books ready to be sold at giveaway prices. Rotary intends to maintain its Bookfests under canvas with all funds raised supporting Cleveland Scouts during its process of re-establishment.
“Capalaba Rotary is very appreciative of the many organisations and community members who have offered assistance. Our aim is for a carnival atmosphere, reinforcing Cleveland Scouts as a happy community site.
The bookfest is open from 1pm to 5pm on May 4, 8am to 4pm on May 5 and 8am to 2pm on May 6. Enquiries to Annette Richards on 0413 714 621.
