DAVINA Carmichael, of Capalaba, belongs to the Feather Clubs Association of Queensland and she will talk about chooks at one of five forums to be held at ROGI’s next meeting on May 9.
Other Redland Organic Growers Incorporated sessions include sharpening and storage of tools, pros and cons for garden bed designs, ways to deal with pests, and a demonstration – ditch the plastic and make wax wraps.
Davina describes herself as an open book when it comes to giving advice on back yard chooks.
“We (FCAQ) try to help people as much as we can and are always happy to answer any questions,” she said.
“If we sell to the public, we like to know that our chickens will be living in healthy conditions and cared for properly.
“Like any domestic animal, chooks need love and attention, even if only being kept for egg laying purposes.
“They don’t want to be hidden away in a corner, never to see anyone.
“Chooks actually enjoy human companionship and are great for de-stressing or for children to experience pet ownership.
“In saying that, when picking your flock, the reason why you want your flock is paramount.”
Find out more from Davina and other speakers on Wednesday, May 9 at 7pm (or 6.15pm for organic shopping) at Salvation Army, corner McDonald Road and MacArthur St, Alexandra Hills.
Entry is $5 and supper is served afterwards. See rogi.com.au
