Redlands Starfish Tri-Athletic may be small but proved their mettle as winners at the recent Nissan State Triathlon Championship awards.
Head Coach, Ben Luscombe, was named Junior Coach of the Year, an award which acknowledges a significant contribution to the development of juniors.
Assistant coach Ted Britt said this was achieved in a healthy, fun, and safe competitive environment, where athletes were given the opportunity to develop skills and strive to achieve personal bests.
“Ben’s dedication to every single one of our athletes and this club is the reason he deserves the recognition of Junior Coach of the Year. He has built an amazing environment. He sets the tone. He sets the vibe,” Mr Britt said.
Starfish Tri-Athletic was also named small club champion and took out the overall aggregate champion trophy for the 2017/18 season at an awards ceremony. The ceremony followed the recent Moreton Bay triathlon.
Also receiving awards were Riley Wingad (overall age group champion for girls aged 10-11), Ted Britt (runner up for the men 40-44 years) and Matthew Lovell (third in the mens 25-29 years) for the 2017/18 season.
“We are family. Each race is like a family barbecue. Our support of each other, the fun we have and the full-of-life attitude is the key to our success. The hard work and dedication to training, the sacrifices made and the willingness to learn is what makes coaching enjoyable,” Luscombe said.
Starfish Tri-Athletic is based at Goodlife, Alexandra Hills with training at various other locations. Luscombe also offers a fully coached program catering for the beginner through to the elite, from young juniors to adult seniors. His focus turns to the cross country season with 20 of his athletes already selected for the Metropolitan East trials in May.
