FLICKERING candles have been placed alongside red roses at a vigil for people who died because of domestic and family violence.
The ceremony at Raby Bay Harbour Park on Wednesday was one of many across the state to mark the beginning of Queensland’s Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month.
Mayor Karen Williams said there had been 19 domestic violence homicides in the state in the past year.
“In this past year we have become increasingly aware that no community is free of the insidiousness of domestic and family violence, including the Redlands,” she said.
“But we also have to learn that together we can make a difference and that we can lead social change and use our collective voice to advocate for better services for those who need it most.”
Cr Williams said the candles glowed as symbols of hope but also represented real stories of tragedy and despair.
“Thankfully they also light up the faces of people who care enough to stand up and be counted.”
Cr Williams said Diner en Rouge, council’s annual fundraiser for domestic violence support services would be held on Saturday, May 12.
“Aided by benefactors, the fundraiser has raised more than $225,000 to help those affected in the Redlands,” she said.
Earlier on Wednesday Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk spoke in Parliament about the government’s latest campaign sought to inform, influence and inspire bystanders to help victims.
“We do not want people to be bystanders,” she said.
“We do not want people to turn a blind eye. I implore people today to check on their neighbours, check on their friends, check on their family members and ask, ‘Is everything okay?’”
“Sadly, every week in Australia at least one woman is killed by her partner. One in four children is exposed to domestic and family violence. These are harrowing statistics.”
Diner en Rouge is held at a location kept secret until guests meet at Redland Performing Arts Centre.
Dress is formal and tickets are $170 each.
