NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian says she's likely to support a bill proposing "safe zones" around the state's abortion clinics after giving government MPs a conscience vote on the legislation.
The legislation, introduced to parliament last week, would create a 150m exclusion zone around abortion clinics and make it an offence to film staff and patients without their consent.
"I appreciate the intent of the bill and for that reason I'm likely to support it," Ms Berejiklian told reporters in Sydney on Wednesday.
However, she said aspects of the legislation were flawed.
"The bill is not perfect at all," Ms Berejiklian said.
"I also felt it very important to give all of our members in parliament a conscience vote because the bill isn't perfect. It's flawed."
The bill was co-sponsored by Labor's Penny Sharpe and Nationals MP Trevor Khan.
Ms Sharpe welcomed the premier's support of the bill.
"Our current laws are failing women in NSW and it is great that the premier recognises this," Ms Sharpe told AAP in a statement.
"I hope the premier's support gives other Liberal Party MPs the confidence to support this bill and support every woman's right to medical treatment free from the interference of others."
It's understood the upper house will vote on the bill on Thursday before it goes to the lower house in June.
