There is some great news for the Bay Islands.
Thanks to the conscientious support from Kim Richards, state Member for Redlands, government commitment has been secured to help finance the installation of world class synthetic green at Macleay Island Bowls Club (MIBC).
Thrilled with the announcement Rod Callaghan, MIBC chairman, said the commitment of $150,000 from Sports and Recreation marks a turning point for the club.
“Without Kim’s passion for the project, we would not have been able to go ahead,” he said.
“Kim’s love for the Redlands and Bay Islands is well known and respected and much appreciated by all.”
The club was successful in applying to Redlands City Council for a grant of $50,000 towards the new green project.

The installation of the retaining wall by Redland Council was the first step in preparation for the new green.
The club was also successful in applying to the Queensland Gambling Community Benefit Fund for a grant of $35,000 to complete the project.
Mr Callaghan said a special thanks must go to David O’Leary with his assistance with all the grant applications and Terri MacDonald, Redland City Council’s local sport and recreation officer for her ongoing support.
The club is hoping to commence work on the new green in late September of 2018 with the official opening planned for December 2018.
With that million dollar view, Club Macleay has become known as the premier venue in the Bay Islands receiving much attention from TV shows like The Great South East and Weekend Getaway.
The joy of playing bowls by the picturesque bay has been a major draw-card to bowlers from all around the country and with corporate and Christmas parties.
A synthetic green was the perfect solution with endless possibilities and much lower maintenance costs, the club could move ahead financially.
With no more requirement for pesticides and chemicals and a major reduction in water usage, the synthetic green will be a lot more environmentally friendly.
“We are excited about the future and are riding high and we can’t wait to get the bowl rolling,” Mr Callaghan said. “This project is going to be a turning point for us.”
