A free community celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture will be staged with a NAIDOC week showcase at Redland Performing Arts Centre on July 8.
The afternoon of activities is headlined by Isaiah Firebrace.
From noon to 2pm there will be a range of family-friendly cultural demonstrations and activities. This year’s NAIDOC theme is Because of her, we can and activities feature or use materials from local indigenous female artists.
Participants can make wood-block artwork with Chez Beauvardia, using new designs created for this day by Shara Delaney and Alicia Close. Get hands-on and learn traditional skills at the weaving workshop or take some quiet time at the story telling corner. There will also be the opportunity to watch and take part in a traditional smoking ceremony to cleanse the spirit and ward off bad spirits, and enjoy the Yulu Burri Ba dancers.
Firebrace will perform from 2pm. Firebrace won the X Factor in 2016 and followed up with a debut single that charted all over the world and notched up over 120 million international streams.
