The Victoria Point Girl Guide Unit will celebrate the 10th anniversary of their annual jumble sale later this month to raise money for their end of year camp.
The event, each year raising more than $1000, was started by Cynthia Carson, who has been a driving force over the years.
All items sold this year will raise money to transport the Girl Guides to an end of year event on the Sunshine Coast and to put towards camping equipment and hut maintenance.
Girl Guides district manager Fran Burns said between 40 and 60 girls would go on the camp which was linked to a focus by Queensland Girl Guides on the Great Barrier Reef.
“Guides and Scouts traditionally do good turns … with the idea being that you should do a good turn for someone once a day, or once a week,” Mrs Burns said.
In Queensland the organisation has chosen the Great Barrier Reef as a focus for a state-wide good turn.
To fit in with the theme the Girl Guides will head to the Sunshine Coast’s Underwater World for a sleepover in the Shark Tunnel as their end of year camp.
“They will fund themselves but this money raised is for the bus to get us all up there, to save everyone travelling separately,” Mrs Burns said.
The Girl Guides are also raising money for the State good turn by making shopping bags out of old t-shirts, following the recent plastic bag ban in supermarkets.
“They're called boomerang shopping bags and we are going to sell them for a gold coin donation,” Mrs Burns said.
The unit’s public relations officer Lisa Broadby said there were important lessons from the sale for the girls.
“From an environmental viewpoint, it teaches the girls about recycling household items and the benefit of recycling rather than discarding,” Mrs Broadby said.
The Girl Guides are encouraged to help with the sale, together with their parents, Girl Guide leaders and supporters.
“The girls will come in their uniform and can sell to the public which gives them more responsibility.”
Clothes, furniture, books, toys, bric-a-brac and household items will be available at the sale on July 28 between 7am and 1pm.
LJ Hooker Victoria Point will host a sausage sizzle and Guide biscuits will be on sale.
Donations can be dropped off at the Girl Guide hut during group meetings on Monday to Thursday evenings.
Alternatively arrangements can be made by emailing Fran Burns on jl.victoriapoint.guides@gmail.com.
The sale will be at the hut at 11 Point O’Halloran Road, Victoria Point.
