FAMILIES escaped to Coochiemudlo Island on Sunday to celebrate Flinder’s Day and its history.
A street parade with community groups, quirky cars, emergency services and Australian Navy Cadets from TS Norfolk marching and the reenactment of the arrival of Lieutenant Matthew Flinders drew in a crowd.
There were food and market stalls, performances from Polish dancing group Maly Brisbane, Kaleidescope dancers and Yula Burri Ba traditional dancers.
Other events on the day included Coochie Art Show and Coffee with a Cop.
Organiser Heather Smith said the turnout was incredible.
“It’s been fantastic with all the services working so well together,” she said.
“We want to thank the boat clubs, including The Wooden Boat Association and Blue Peter Boat Club, for bringing hundreds of boats to the shore for the day.”
Ms Smith said the celebration was a great day to share the island with visitors and to celebrate its history from Flinder’s landing through to storytelling by the Yula Burri Ba people.
Paul Moynagh who has been acting as Matthew Flinders for about 5 years said the role was passed down to him by the previous actor.
“I’ve been a member of the community for so long that I became involved and enjoy it every year,” she said.
“It’s great to see how it changes each year – one year there was a pirate theme and this year, there is a big focus on cultural dancing.
“It’s great to share the bay with everyone on this historical day.”
