CAPALABA Bowls Club members has presented cheques towards cancer research after raising $20,800 at their annual Cancer Charity Day.
QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, Breast Cancer Network Australia and Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia received $6900 each on July 12 at Capalaba Sports Club.
Capalaba resident Carol Kennedy was praised for her efforts in single-handedly raising $11,500 in the past five years from making and selling her homemade chutneys, jams and pickles for the cause.
Capalaba Sports Club marketing and event manager Kelly Regenet said even though Ms Kennedy could no longer make the products anymore, the club wanted to thank her for her contribution with flowers and kind words.
During the presentations, Cancer Charity Day organiser Bob Weir also announced he would step back from his duties to travel around Australia.
Men’s bowls club president Wally Jacobsen credited organiser Bob Weir for the increasing amount that was raised each year for relentlessly seeking help from individuals and businesses.
“There is a lot of community support but Bob knocks on doors for donations,” he said.
“He knocked on 61 doors to get 21 yeses this year and we got a full house of 180 people who attended and great prizes to give away because of it.”
Ms Regenet said despite the loss, she wished Mr Weir all the best with his future ventures.
“He has been driving force behind the day so his enthusiasm and dedication towards the day will be missed but we wish him well on his travels and I’m sure he will be back on future years,” she said.
“Bill does have big shoes to fill but I’m sure there will be someone here to step up and take the reins.”
