DUMB thieves are breaking into cars parked at Redlands ferry terminals in failed efforts to steal them.
Police said plastic steering column covers had been removed and ignition wires cut in two cars earlier this month.
One car was parked at Toondah Harbour between August 2 and 7 when it was targeted.
The other was broken into at Banana Street in the Weinam Creek area sometime between August 6 and 8.
Police said a crowbar was likely used to jemmy the Toyota Cressida’s door open.
The break-ins are the latest crime to hit Redlands ferry terminals, which are hot spots for property offences.
Islanders leave their cars, which they use for mainland travel, unattended for long periods before returning to find their vehicles have been damaged.
The problem is worse at Redland Bay’s Weinam Creek ferry terminal, which is the busier of the two and lacks CCTV.
In June, at least nine cars were damaged and one flipped onto its side during a vandalism and theft spree.
In the past week, a number of tyres and one set of plates were stolen.
Redland Bay police said two tyres were removed from a 2011 Ford Falcon sometime between 3pm on August 6 and 8am the next day.
A concrete block was used to hold up a Ford Territory, which had its rear tyre pinched sometime between August 4 and 7.
A set of registration plates was also stolen from a vehicle at the terminal sometime between 5.30am and 4.30pm on August 3. Police said the plates were replaced with others.
Registration plates were also taken from a car parked at Benfer Road at Victoria Point on August 7, with another targeted at Coburg Street in Cleveland between August 3 and 7.
