MULLOWAY have been in excellent numbers again this week.
The Brisbane River was one of the hot spots for good catches along the Sunken Wall to Luggage Point.
Mulloway was also caught off the southern tip of Goat Island and eastern side of Mud Island in the Bay, Marks Rocks in the Logan River, the eastern tip of Short Island and Jumpinpin and around the Seaway in the Broadwater. There has been some good catches of tailor off the Gold Coast’s northern beaches.
Catches can be hit and miss, but when the fish do turn up it is usually in the evening, anywhere from the Southport Pumping Jetty to Narrowneck. Philip Park is one of the more consistent locations for catches. There’s been good numbers of tailor spread throughout estuary waters. Trolling inside bar entrances or the edge of main channels have been a productive technique.
Flathead are dominating catches this week, all rivers, creeks and estuary waters are producing good numbers for lure and bait anglers.
The best technique is to cast around the mouth of draining channels and bays, keeping your lure or bait on the bottom and moving. At this time of year, if you catch a flathead it’s worth persisting in that area because there are usually others close by.
Whiting catches are improving. The better catches have been in the upper reaches of the Nerang River past the Council Chambers, around Ageston Sand in the Logan River and in Tingalpa Creek and Kedron Brook Floodway on the northside.
There has been longtail tuna in the northern bay in the shipping lanes off Bribie and edge of the Spitfire Banks outside the Green Zone have been the best locations.
On the offshore scene there’s been good numbers of traglin around this week, the better catches have been after dark, but anglers fishing in 40-60m of water in the day are still getting good results.
Top spots off Moreton have been Square Patch and Deep Tempest and off the Gold Coast on the 24 and 36 fathom reefs east of the Seaway.
