LONG-TIME members of the Coochiemudlo Island Surf Life Saving Club Colin Sloane and Russell Rubie have been awarded National Medals.
The Commonwealth medals recognise long service in organisations that protect life and property at some risk to their members.
Mr Sloane and Mr Rubie far exceeded the criteria of having served for at least 30 hours a year for more than 15 years.
Both men have volunteered with the club since its inception more than 20 years ago, joining with their children but staying on much longer.
Colin Sloane said he felt honoured and humbled to receive the National Medal.
“I didn’t realise the award was available,” Mr Sloane said.
“I feel very privileged and honoured to receive it and see surf life saving acknowledged.”
He said that he was not involved in the club for the recognition.
“I am there for the kids, to build up community spirit and encourage leadership, which is lacking in many young kids these days.”
Mr Rubie said he was gobsmacked at the announcement about the National Medals at the club’s annual general meeting.
“I had no idea there was such a thing,” Mr Rubie said.
“It’s a pretty good feeling to be recognised nationally for something, especially when you are not looking for recognition.”
Mr Rubie said it was rewarding watching juniors go through the club and becoming adults.
“This is a great honour for the Coochiemudlo Island club to have two recipients of National Medals,” Mr Rubie said.
“We have only been in surf life saving since about 2000 and are a smaller club catering for families.”
