MULLOWAY catches are still excellent and the prime time is an hour either side of the change in tide, especially in deeper holes and around bar entrances.
Whiting season is also now in full swing, with good numbers in most rivers and creeks.
Many places are producing catches including the Nerang River, Ageston Sands in the Logan, Tingalpa Creek and Pumicestone Passage. There are a few bull sharks around, especially in the Logan and Brisbane rivers. An early morning or evening high tide change has been the best time to target them.
Tailor anglers have been shoulder to shoulder on the Gold Coast northern beaches. Tailor are never a guarantee but they usually turn up anytime after sunset till late. It’s been a similar story on South and North Stradbroke islands. Top areas have been either side of the Jumpinpin Bar.
Small snapper up to 55cm are making up most of the catch for anglers fishing in Moreton Bay. Top spots in the bay this week were the north-eastern side of Coochie, the southern side of Peel and the shallows on the eastern side of Mud Island.
Bigger tides at the weekend could see the quality of catches improve, especially after dark. There have been good reports of tuna in the bay, especially north of Mud Island, around the Brisbane River leads and in the shipping lanes east of Bribie Island.
There has been a few reports of school mackerel. Mosty have come from just inside South Passage Bar and the top end of the Rainbow Channel. The best technique has been to troll small flashy lures at depth with the aid of a downrigger or paravane.
Offshore snapper were still in good numbers last week but had no size to them. A few pearl perch were caught on the wider grounds and plenty of tuskfish, moses perch and other reef species on the bottom.
