Art work created by the Creative Express Art Therapy group will be auctioned at a Party in Pink to be staged at the Victoria Point state school hall from 2pm to 5pm on October 13.
The art work has been created by a group of women brought together through a shared battle with breast cancer. The women create their art at Cleveland on a monthly basis and use this time to talk through their various situations and support one another. All funds raised through the sale of the work as well as raffles and purchasing a ticket in the 100s club raffle is donated to Mater’s Chicks in Pink.
Member Heather Ferrier of Capalaba said the group offered support, friendship and an opportunity to learn new skills.
“I know when I come here and I’m working on a piece, I’m not thinking about being sick. Working on the art brings you into the now. It sounds naff, but being in the present moment is a good place to be especially when you are surrounded with an amazing group of people who support you. This is a place where you can be yourself,” Ms Ferrier said.
“And when we have the auction, it’s a chance to cut loose and have some fun.”
Christine Psenicnik of Thornlands said the group also gave its members a chance to give back to people who had given to them.
Kay Aberdeen of Manly said the group also offered a shared understanding.
“No two stories are the same. We are different, but similar and this is a place where we understand one another,” she said.
Group founder Clancy Follett said the diversity of the group was reflected in the art work.
“We invite everyone into our space. We offer people a snippet of ourselves, our creativity and our triumph,” Ms Follett said.
