THREE early members of the Redlands Boat Club have celebrated their 90th birthdays.
The distinguished life members, born in 1928, are Bruce King, Nancy Cumming and Val Altman.
Together they have served the club’s committee for more than 40 years.
Mr King was the club’s inaugural commodore from 1975 and went on to serve in that position for three years.
Mrs Cumming was treasurer in 1987-1988 and publicity officer from 1989 to 2002.
Mrs Altman was secretary for 25 years between 1977 and 2004.
Merv Alley, who was photographed with the club’s distinguished life members in 2010, would also have turned 90 this year but has since passed away.
Speaking on behalf of the three members, Mrs Cumming said they had lived “the glory days”.
“Starting off, the camaraderie and fundraising for our safety net was intense, while generosity of spirit and fresh ideas gushed like a fountain,” Mrs Cumming said.
She said membership in the early days was varied and interesting and camaraderie with other clubs also grew.
“Suddenly through lots of unseen effort we were part of the 4 Corners Events, May Cruises (later renamed The Bay Cruise), events with Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron at Manly, Little Ship Club and Southport Yacht Club.”
Mrs Cumming also acknowledged families who shared their homes, time and effort before the club had a base.
“The Williams family hosted our first fundraiser within two weeks of our inaugural meeting and later made space in their garage for monthly meetings,” she said.
Mrs Cumming said the Altman’s home was used for storage and to collate magazines and the family had spent time and money on postage and phone calls.
“The King’s, living closer to the boat ramp, took on public phone status and coffee shop during the pre-mobile days, when the nearest phone was at the Grand View Hotel.”
“The club’s marine radio – VN4ED – was housed at the King’s home and attended way beyond the expected hours, easing many a night’s worry.
“This role was eventually taken over by Bob and Darby Lace, caretakers on Peel Island.”
At last month’s annual general meeting, Mike Streets and Gary Bowden were recognised as distinguished life members.
