A cocktail evening on Friday, August 31 marked the official opening of Redland Art Awards 2018.
Three prize winners were selected from the 47 shortlisted works.
They were chosen by head judge Queensland University Technology lecturer in visual art Charles Robb.
He was supported by artist and senior lecturer of contemporary Australian Indigenous art at Queensland College of Art Dr Bianca Beetson and director of Redland Art Gallery Emma Bain.
The exhibition was officially opened by Mr Robb, together with Redland City Council mayor Karen Williams and council’s chief executive Andrew Chesterman.
Mr Robb spoke about his overall impressions of the exhibition and the major prize winners were announced.
During the official opening proceedings all speakers commented on the high standard of works.
The shortlisted entrants were also congratulated on their achievement.
Prize winners
First prize – acquisitive ($15000): Queensland artist Debbie Taylor Worley for Beyond Gavrinis
Second prize ($4000): Tasmanian artist Chee Yong for Self portrait as a ghost
Local Environment prize ($2500): NSW artist Martin Claydon for Greenscreen #16 breadfruit Blight
This free exhibition is open to the public and continues at Redland Art Gallery, Cleveland until Sunday October 14.
Exhibition visitors are invited to vote for the $500 Meredith Foxton People's Choice Award sponsored by Redland Yurara Art Society.
The winner will be announced on Thursday, October 4 on the Redland Art Awards website redlandartawards.org.au. Photos from the awards night are also on the site.
