CONSTRUCTION of the $2 million Thornlands Community Park, to include all abilities facilities, is under way.
Cr Paul Golle said he was hoping to have the first stage of the park finished next year.
“It has been dragging on for too long,” Cr Golle said.
“The longer we leave a project, the higher the cost.”
Cr Golle said all abilities toilets and a car park had been built.
This was being followed by a circuit footpath, picnic shelters with barbecues, an open space area, landscaping and a water bubbler.
“I negotiated for this phase to be brought forward so the park is completed earlier,” Cr Golle said.
The second stage, which has not been included in the current budget, is expected to include an all abilities playground, picnic facilities within a fenced area, a sculptural play area, exercise equipment, stage and youth area with half court and parkour.
The amenities are council’s first Changing Places facility, which is part of an Australia-wide project to meet the needs of people with severe disabilities.
Cr Golle said work was also being done at Freshwater Park, Thornlands, with an expansion of play equipment to start early in October.
The playground will be fenced off during the installation of a play unit, springer and softfall, and shade sails. Trees will also be planted.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of November.
