MUSIC lovers who fancy a few old-time sounds will be in for a treat soon at Wynnum.
Queensland Baroque will put on a concert featuring 11 of their musicians performing on period instruments, including chalumeau, dulcian, sackbut, baroque flute, recorders, baroque bassoon, baroque violin and baroque cello.
Queensland Baroque is a pioneering Brisbane period instrument orchestra founded in 2011.
Members are from all over Brisbane and surrounds, including Capalaba’s Alex Averi who plays baroque cello.
Wynnum Manly Arts Council president Sue Willingham said orchestra members played music by a number of baroque composers, including Telemann, Purcell, Gabrieli, Praetorius, Conti, Boismortier and Hotteterre.
“Their vision is for community engagement and for creating opportunities for musicians to explore the world of historical performance practices,” she said.
Orchestra members include Shaun Wigley (baroque bassoon, dulcian), Kathy Williams-Devries (chalumeau, recorder), Yvette McKinnon (violin), Michael Yelland (sackbut), Jacqueline Webber (baroque violin), Sandy Chou (baroque flute), Madge Martin (recorder), Naomi Jewett (guest soprano) and harpsichord player Dr Catherine Grant, from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music.
“Madge is an international student in Brisbane and she brings a wealth of knowledge of Baroque style gained in her home country of France,” Ms Willingham said.
The orchestra’s chamber concert will be held on Sunday, October 7, at 2pm at the Wynnum Municipal Hall, Cnr Bay Tce and Cedar Street Wynnum.
Bookings are preferred as afternoon tea is included in the ticket prices of $15 for adults, $12 for seniors/concessions and $8 for children. Phone 3348 2369 or email wmarts@tpg.com.au to book.
