UPDATE 12.20PM:
A 44-YEAR-OLD Amity Point man, who allegedly attacked his neighbours overnight, has been returned to custody after appearing at Cleveland Magistrates Court.
He will face court again on Thursday, charged with offences including attempted murder, deprivation of liberty and serious assault of a police officer.
A Queensland Police Service spokesperson said earlier that police would allege the man hacked open the front door of a Kawana Street home using a machete before hacking at a bathroom door, injuring a 59-year-old male occupant barricaded inside.
A woman, 59, was also inside the bathroom at the time.
“At one point the blade went through a gap in the door striking the 59-year-old man in the head causing a laceration to his face,” the spokesperson said.
The incident happened about 7.30pm on Tuesday night.
The spokesperson said an off-duty police officer, who heard the commotion from outside, had confronted the 44-year-old inside the home, before the man was taken into custody after a violent struggle with officers.
“(The off-duty police officer) managed to distract the man – who had obvious injuries to his chest and was bleeding – until additional police resources arrived,” the spokesperson said.
