Building a peaceful community has become an annual ceremony for The Rotary Club of Redland Sunrise featuring a candle-lighting ceremony to honour the United Nations International Day of Peace on September 21.
This year’s ceremony raised awareness of the 70th Anniversary of the Declaration of the Universal Charter of Human Rights, with the unveiling of a plaque on a Peace Wall at Alexandra Hills by District 9630 Governor, Jitendra Prasad, and the Mayor for Redland City, Councillor Karen Williams.
Translated into 500 languages worldwide, the Declaration of Human Rights recognises the inherent dignity and equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human race, as shown in 30 Articles of the Convention.
Cardboard copies of the articles were planted in the garden at the foot of the Peace Wall by school children from two local primary schools, together with the crowd of Rotarians and politicians, a veteran United Nations Peacekeeper, and members of other community groups.
The Peace Wall is a prominent landmark carrying the message “Peace on Earth” which was constructed many years ago by The Redland City Council at the request of the Redlands Baha’i Community.
Messages of support for the peace building initiative were received from the Prime Minister of Australia Honourable Scott Morrison, Premier of Queensland Annastacia Palaszczuk, and Rotary International President, Barry Rassin.
“Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change, across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves,” Mr Rassin said.
