SEVEN softball players who live or play in the Redlands have been chosen for the state’s Open Women’s State Squad for 2018-19.
The team, known as the Queensland Heat, was named after last month’s Open Women’s state Softball Championships.
Selection was based on the player’s year round performances.
Redlands Softball Association players Janice Blackman of Morayfield, Georgia Blair of Runaway Bay, Nicole Boughton of Fitzgibbon, Dorinda Stone of Wynnum West, Stacey Webber of Wynnum West and Tamieka Whitefield of Alexandra Hills, will join Ormiston’s Jayme Reddacliffe from the Far North Queensland Association.
The squad will train towards the 73rd Australian Women’s National Championships to be held at Mirrabooka, Western Australia in January.
The final team for the tournament will be announced closer to the date.
The QLD Heat will be looking to reclaim their title, after claiming silver against NSW at the the championships last year and the year before.
Australia’s Open Women’s Team, the Aussie Spirit, will be selected after Nationals.
In the under 17 state squads, Redlands players Tyeena Pang of Mount Isa, Aiden Blackmore of Crestmead, Byron Humble of Victoria Point, Kynan Molander of Alexandra Hills, Callum Turner of Birkdale and Caleb Vandegriendt of Ormiston were selected.
The girls’ and boys’ state squads will attend a state team camp on October 27 and 28 after which the final teams will be named.
The teams will train towards the Australian U17 Championships in January.
The Redlands Softball Association’s under 17 boys’ team won the State Softball Championships, taking out the grand final and championship title.
The event was held at Mackay from September 22 to 24, with 10 teams competing for the top spot.
The Redlands side played in the grand final against the New Zealand Development teams, claiming a convincing 12-4 victory to win the title.
The Redlands Softball Association team playing in the under 17 Girls State Championships at Caboolture over the same dates came second.
