THORNLANDS has a road to nowhere as the council and state government tussle over who is responsible for connecting the new Pateman Street to Cleveland-Redland Bay Road.
Cr Paul Golle says the missing link is due to red tape at state level.
But a Main Roads spokesperson said the connection was a council responsibility.
Cr Golle said Redland City Council had built Pateman Street but could not link it to Cleveland-Redland Bay Road until the state government completed the intersection.
Pateman Street would connect Boundary and Cleveland-Redland Bay roads, enabling motorists to avoid a roundabout between Thornlands and Victoria Point. It would also give residents of estates being built off Boundary Road access to Cleveland-Redland Bay Road.
“I am pretty annoyed that such a simple project has been held up by bureaucratic process,” Cr Golle said.
“It’s time the state stops pushing their policies onto local government areas and starts delivering the infrastructure required.”
Cr Golle said he had called on Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey, Redlands MP Kim Richards and the Department of Main Roads and Transport to get the works done.
Redland City Council chief executive Andrew Chesterman appealed in a letter to Main Roads director-general Neil Scales that the works should be a high priority for the state.
Mr Chesterman said public inquiries about the road were adding to the requests council had received about broader upgrades to the state-controlled Cleveland-Redland Bay Road.
“There is increasing political and community focus on this area and there is an urgent need to deliver the extension and intersection upgrade as identified in the structure plan to improve the efficiency of the state’s sub-arterial network in and around this area,” Mr Chesterman said.
“...My staff and I are willing to provide whatever support is necessary to assist you in reprioritising other planned works to accommodate this critical piece of infrastructure.”
The TMR spokesperson said Cleveland-Redland Bay Road was a state-controlled road and a connection to it required TMR approval.
“A development application has been referred to TMR, which requires works to connect Beveridge Road to Cleveland-Redland Bay Road,” the spokesperson said.
“TMR has no objection to the Beveridge Road connection providing it meets relevant standards.
“The developer is required to produce a design for the connection for TMRs’ consideration and approval. The works would be funded by the developer.”
