UPDATE 10.30am
REDLAND City Council has postponed waste and recycling collections on Russell Island following the grounding of the vehicle ferry on Monday.
Council said the collections would not take place on Tuesday but would be provided as soon as possible this week.
Sealink’s general manager south-east Queensland Heather Truman said the 4.45pm vehicle ferry Venture had “become attached to the ramp during the outgoing tide”.
She said it was unable to be freed until the next effective high tide which was late Tuesday afternoon.
“We have advised customers of the situation via telephone and Facebook updates and have apologised for the inconvenience caused,” Ms Truman said.
“We worked to offer them accommodation for the night where required.
“The team at SeaLink are very sorry for the inconvenience this incident has caused and we will work as quickly as we can to restore services to normal.”
The Russell Island waste transfer station is open from 8am to 2pm for any urgent waste disposal requirements.
UPDATE 7.15am
THE vehicle ferry is likely to be grounded on the Russell Island ramp until about 3pm on Tuesday, October 3.
Stradbroke Ferries said in a social media update on Monday night that they would be contacting affected customers to organise alternative travel arrangements.
There will be no vehicle ferry services to or from Russell Island until the car barge has been removed.
EARLIER
VEHICLE ferry services to and from Russell Island have been cancelled after the car barge became stuck.
Stradbroke Ferries said on social media about 6pm on Monday that the Venture vehicle ferry had become stuck on the ramp at Russell Island.
“At this stage, we anticipate that we will not be able to remove the vessel from the ramp until later tonight,” the company said.
“As a result, there will be no vehicle ferry services to or from Russell Island tonight.”
Redland City Bulletin reported in March that the barge had become stuck also at Russell Island.
On that occasion the ferry was only refloated the day after it ran aground.
At the time Sealink Travel Group chief executive Jeff Ellis, whose company operates Stradbroke Ferries, said the ferry’s engine control cable had broken while berthing.
