FORMER Redland Shire Council chairman and councillor Merv Genrich has passed away.
Mr Genrich was first elected as a divisional councillor for the Division 2 area of Victoria Point and Redland Bay in 1976.
He served a second term as councillor for Victoria Point and Coochiemudlo Island (then Division 5).
In 1982 he was elected as chairman of the council, a position he held until he lost the election in 1991.
Deputy Mayor Lance Hewlett expressed his condolences to Mr Genrich’s family and friends.
“Merv Genrich has certainly left a strong legacy in the Redlands,” Cr Hewlett said.
In 2016, Mr Genrich was recognised as the father of the orchestra having set up the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra about 30 years previously.
The orchestra went on to become the Cleveland Sinfonia.
Mr Genrich was a founding patron of the Redland Shire Band, which became Redland City Band, formed in 1984.
He was also patron of the Victoria Point Garden Club, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year.
Redland City Bulletin has sought further comment on Mr Genrich’s passing.
