Lowndes eyes off more Supercars glory

The 44-year-old claimed his seventh victory at Mount Panorama, earlier this month, with co-driver Steven Richards.

Rather than settling for that success as the glorious end to his glittering full-time career, Lowndes heads into this weekend's Gold Coast 600 eager for another triumph.

Lowndes and Richards' Bathurst win means they arrive on the streets of Surfers Paradise as the leaders of the Enduro Cup standings - the annual trophy awarded to the best performed pair across the season's three endurance races.

Unsurprisingly - considering he's won almost all there is to win in Supercars racing - Lowndes has lifted the Enduro Cup before, alongside Warren Luff in 2013.

But that hasn't dulled any desire from the veteran to mark the end of his successful partnership with Richards in style.

"The one thing that Richo and I are keen on is the Enduro Cup, we're leading that currently and we'd love to be able to hoist that high at the end of Sunday," the Autobarn Lowndes Racing driver told AAP.

"It just shows the consistency over the three races. For us, as a small team, that would be tremendous."

Lowndes, a three-time race winner on the streets of Surfers, arrives on the Gold Coast fourth on the championship standings.

With a 489-point gap between him and series leader Shane Van Gisbergen he admits the chances of a fourth championship is unlikely.

"I really need the luck with the three guys in front me having a disaster and having DNFs," Lowndes said.

"We have closed the gap to Jamie (Whincup) but knowing how competitive he is around here, the streets of the Gold Coast, it's going to be quite tough.

"Both Scotty (McLaughlin) and Shane are Kiwis so I'm sure when we go to New Zealand they're going to have huge support over there and it's a track that we've never won at, and then we've got the streets of Newcastle.

"I'm a bit of a long shot."
