The Tigers put a frustrating few weeks behind them with an impressive start to Saturday’s two-day fixtures, while rain again played spoilsport in the sixth grade, Taverners and Ladies games on Sunday afternoon.
First grade will need to fight back from a difficult position next week if they are to salvage first innings points from their encounter with Valley. After losing the toss and being sent into bat, Redlands lost 5 for 83 including the big wickets of Sam Heazlett (19) and Jimmy Peirson (0). A patient innings of 35 from Liam Smith at the top of the order steadied the ship, as did a middle order partnership between James Bazley (34) and Sam Howse (40). But a procession of wickets later ended the Tigers innings with the score on 158.
Josh Arnold and Charles Mailli took one wicket each as Valley finished the day two down for 68 after 23 overs. Second grade are in a strong position against the same opposition and will be looking to secure their first two-day victory of the season next weekend.
A wet outfield meant the Tigers did not take the field until after midday, but that did not stop the Tigers quicks from running through the opposition top order. Craig Weier was the Tigers’ chief destroyer, claiming six wickets in his first spell of 10 overs before nabbing another in his second to finish with seven.
Jamie Ryan provided the perfect foil for Weier, taking three of his own wickets to help dismiss Valley for 166 on their home patch. In reply Redlands are 1/15 with Michael McEwan the man to depart before stumps. Third grade’s clash with Valley at home hangs in the balance after the visitors posted 248 on day one. Luke Haegel was at his usual best for the Tigers, claiming 4/46, while Hassan Sardar chimed in with two wickets to keep the opposition at bay.
Wickets for Josh Thompson, Matt Dwyer and Josh Fraser were equally important in the context of the game. Redlands will return next week with aspirations of securing their second win of the season. Fourth grade’s visit to Valley was also delayed due to the wet, but much like second grade, this did not stop them from hitting their straps.
Pearce Anderson and Lincoln Rosiak consistently troubled the opposition openers throughout their first spell, but were unable to make any inroads. An early introduction for Wayne Todman turned the tide immediately on a quickly developing partnership, as he had the opposition opener caught at gully off his first delivery.
Things got better from there, as he claimed a further three wickets during an uninterrupted 15 over spell to finish the day with 4/23. Valley will resume at 5/131 next Saturday.
Every time a partnership began to develop, Todman was there to break it.

Fifth grade dismissed Valley for 190 on Ron Field Oval despite missing seven opportunities in the field.
Alex Ward (4/23) continued his good run of form, while Ravin Wijeyeratne (3/52) and Zach Addison (2/32) also chimed in with crucial wickets to help restrict the visitors to a subpar total.
The Tigers lost one wicket as they looked to survive the final two overs of play in fading light, meaning they will resume next week with almost the entire run chase ahead of them and nine wickets in hand.
Sixth Grade one found themselves in trouble after losing their top order within the first hour of play, but put themselves back on track through the efforts of Jesse McDuff (36) and Chandeep Kamra (31) to post 142.
A wicket each to Ethan Raymond and Keshavkeerthi Chandrasekaran before the close of play restricted Valley to 2/48.
Sixth grade two claimed four Norths wickets for 66 through the bowling of Matt Wheeler (2/5) and Chris Barker (2/9) before Sunday’s afternoon storm wiped out any chance of further play.
Sixth grade three claimed their second win of the season and remain unbeaten through three rounds of competition thanks to Saturday’s big one-day win over the Rebel Tourists.
Redlands piled on the runs batting first as Jake Davies brought up his second half century of the new season to help his side to 9/154.
Matt Jagga (30) and Jason Lau (19) were also key in pushing the total beyond 150.
The Rebel Tourists gave the Tigers’ total a good crack but fell 15 runs short thanks to Tom Waters (3/15) and Lachlan Ciesiolka (3/33).
The Lord’s Taverners side were yet again at the mercy of Mother Nature as their clash with UQ ended in an abandonment.
The Tigers dismissed the home side for just 99 in the 33rd over thanks to some tight bowling from Zac Maguire (3/14), Jack Sinfield (2/11), Sam Geyer (2/11) and Josh Smith (2/30).
Redlands’ openers Jack Sinfield (22) and Stephan Muller (20*) made a fast start to the run chase, but their progress was halted when the umpires called for the covers as a storm approached the ground.
The rain came soon after and with the Tigers’ innings just 10.4 overs old, the game was declared abandoned despite Tigers dominant position.
Sunday’s storms also sent the Redlands Tigers’ ladies side running for cover.
After posting 167 batting first, the Tigers looked in a good position to seal yet another victory, this time against Wynnum-Manly on Fred Kratzmann Oval.
Clodagh Ryall (29), Hannah McLaughlin (27), Jesica Pang (22) and Jess Hastings (22*) saw the Tigers through to an imposing total.
Ryall (2/4) and McLaughlin (1/4) then got to work with ball in hand and had Wynnum 3/16 as the storms rolled in, putting an end to the game in the 11th over and forcing an abandonment.
