The Redlands Bonsai Society’s annual exhibition will go ahead this Sunday, just months after a fire gutted the club premises.
The Cleveland Scout Hall, which housed the society and much of its property, was completely destroyed in March.
An Ormiston man has since been charged with arson in relation to the incident.
“It was very disappointing to lose the Scout Hall as a facility in such a senseless, destructive way,” Redlands Bonsai Society vice-president Stephen Cullum said.
Mr Cullum said the society's 70 members have been working hard over the past seven months to replace items lost in the fire and find a new site for the club.
“The recovery effort has focused on finding a regular venue for meetings and workshops, as well as replacing equipment and annual show display stands,” he said.
“There's been quite a bit of procurement activity, coordination with community groups and even lots of sewing to prepare exhibition table cloths and painting stands.”
Thanks to contributions from several community groups, the group has replaced lost items including show stands, electrical and audio-visual equipment.
Mr Cullum said community cooperation was vital in helping the group get back on its feet.
“The support of the Redlands City Council, Redlands RSL, community services such as the Victoria Point Men’s Shed and other bonsai clubs in the Brisbane area has been central to the reemergence of the Redlands Bonsai Society from the dark days after the fire.
“We are very grateful for lots of community support.”
The annual exhibition, one of the largest of its kind in Queensland, will feature 75 different bonsai trees, tended by members.
Mr Cullum said the society’s love for bonsai kept it going after the destruction of the Scout Hall.
“It appeals to many people because it can be quite absorbing and contemplative, if not addictive.
“Our club offers social engagement, friendship, learning and a challenging hobby, all great ingredients for a community group.”
The Redlands Bonsai Society annual exhibition will be held on Sunday 4th November from 9am to 4pm at the Donald Simpson Centre, Cleveland.
