WHEN Ashleigh Conwell (nee Fallon) was featured on the front page of The Redlands Times in 2008, little did she know the article would introduce her to her now-husband, Matt.
Mr Conwell, then 20, contacted Ms Conwell, then 17, through MySpace after seeing the paper on the coffee table at his home.
The publication amalgamated with the Bayside Bulletin in 2014 to become Redland City Bulletin.
The story, published on September 12, 2008, featured a picture of Ms Conwell at the Leukaemia Foundation’s Light the Night event, where she was volunteering.
“My grandfather had passed away from leukaemia, and after that, I decided to volunteer for the Leukaemia Foundation,” Ms Conwell said.
“In some way, it feels like he introduced me to Matt.”
After messaging back and forth for a few weeks, Ms Conwell met Mr Conwell at Cleveland Harbour.
“I was definitely hesitant, but I finally agreed to meet with him,” she said.
“I wasn’t really concerned (that he had contacted me because of the article). I could tell he had a good heart.”
Their wedding, held last year, featured a copy of the article as a reminder of how the couple first met.
“I've kept the entire newspaper for all these years and we framed it so that we could display it at our wedding,” Ms Conwell said.
“Our celebrant also incorporated the story into our ceremony. Many of our family and friends hadn't actually heard the story of how we met.”
Celebrating the 10-year anniversary of their first date on Thursday November 1, the couple looks back fondly on the article that set their relationship in motion.
“I am so grateful that my mother-in-law grabbed the paper off the driveway that day,” Ms Conwell said.
