THE exhibit House of Hope is a beautiful rich and natural aesthetic experience on now at Redland Art Gallery.
The artist Susan Fell Mclean has used only eucalyptus leaves to dye large shibori art cloths in two installations.
She achieves amazing deep colours and the exhibition demonstrates some wonderful patterning made by a variety of shibori techniques.
“My intention is only to demonstrate that textiles can be an amazing art form, but to bring home an environmental message", she said.
“At a time when the environment of our planet is suffering a disastrous assault from pollution, runoff, from synthetic dyes used in the textile industry, flows freely into many rivers throughout the world. This exhibition invites us to consider our own daily use of synthetic dyes and fibres, and consider the beauty of natural plant dyes.”
She draws on her recent attendance as guest presenter at the UNESCO Madagascar Festival of Plants Ecology and Colour. The exhibition runs until December 2.
