The Get RAAD program is encouraging the Redlands community to Get Real About Alcohol and Drugs.
Launching on November 14, the program is made up of five information sessions to educate young people on drug and alcohol misuse.
Get RAAD developer and operator Dominic Shelley said the program was multi-tiered and covered key demographics affected by youth drug use.
“The first tier is about working with young people that are not yet using, that are experimenting, or that have misuse issues,” Mr Shelley said.
“Recently, I've interviewed young people, and all of them said they wouldn't speak to their parents or teachers (about using drugs).
“So when I asked them who they were talking to, they said just among themselves, and I thought that was quite dangerous.”
The program also includes information sessions for families and service providers such as hospitals, police, and child protection services.
“We're encouraging connection between young people, families and teachers, and breaking down barriers between (them) and service providers,” Mr Shelley said.
“We’re trying to increase the opportunity for someone to say hey, I need some help.”
Mr Shelley encouraged members of parliament, service providers, young people, families and the wider community to attend the program launch.
“There's a negative stigma surrounding drug and alcohol use,” he said.
“I'm trying to provide real, accurate and evidence-based information so we can minimise the harm to young people and families.”
The program will be launched on November 14 from 10am to 12pm at The Cage Community Centre.
It is hosted by The Cage Youth Foundation and supported by the Redlands Local Drug Action Team, which is federally funded.
People interested in attending should RSVP by November 7 to Dominic Shelley on 0438 557 573, or via dsgetraad@outlook.com.
