It is great when members of the public fund raise for those in need, through their commitment hard work and passion for something they believe in and want to support.
It is even more significant when it involves young people from within our communities, who, around their school, work or associated extracurricular activities, can find the time to train and raise funds for a cause that is close to their hearts.
Such a group of 10 motivated young people has chosen a charity called African Hearts.
The group has completed a combined 50 kilometre swim at the Cleveland Aquatic Swimming Pool and raised more than $3700 from sponsors as they pounded away.
African Hearts international relations director Ainsley Winten from Capalaba said she was impressed with their effort, in the laps they swam and the money they raised.
Ms Winten’s charity raises funds to rescue, accommodate, rehabilitate and educate Ugandan street kids.
“That money will make a significant contribution to our work in Uganda and I’m wrapped that these great, young people identified with the need and took positive action,” Ms Winten said.
“Hopefully, we can make this an annual event that will become an integral part of our fundraising and involve more of our young leaders of tomorrow, giving of themselves to assist other kids less fortunate than them.”
She said the money raised could help create Ugandan leaders.
