A Lions spokesperson said the program, established in 1961, was aimed at helping participants to develop a broader view of people and the world.
Emma had been sponsored by the Lions Club of Redland Bay-Victoria Point and Oliver by the Thornlands-Pt Halloran Lions Club.
“The aim of the program is to create and foster a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the world,” the spokesperson said.
“Whilst overseas, the youth live with one or more families associated with Lions International to experience firsthand a new culture, lifestyle and customs.”
The spokesperson said Emma hoped to experience a white Christmas.
She would first be hosted at Staunton, Virginia by a family whose daughter had stayed with her own family in Australia in July.
Emma would then travel to Atlanta, Georgia to visit three more Lions families.
