POLICE are warning residents to lock up when at home, including high-rise dwellers.
Senior Constable Ricki Brudenall said thieves could scale tall buildings to enter unlocked apartments via balconies.
“It is easy to become complacent with security on balconies,” Senior Constable Brudenall said.
“Living several floors up doesn’t give you added security, you still need to practice good security habits.”
A Queensland Police Service spokesperson urged residents to lock security doors and windows with keys.
Removing items kept outdoors that could be used as steps was another top tip.
People were also reminded to report all suspicious behaviour to police and to know their neighbours.
“Remember that having a lock on your door will not keep you safe if you don’t actually lock it,” the spokesperson said.
“Ensure you have sufficient airflow at all times.”
Always dial Triple Zero (000) in an emergency.
Report crime to Policelink on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
