ALEXANDA Hills Junior Australian Football Club and the Meteors netball club will forgo their traditional sign-on days in favour of a family fun day on February 2.
Club chairperson Leanne Taylor said the event, which would feature market stalls, rides and activities, would involve local community members and groups.
“This is very exciting for us as it is really the first (event) of its kind at the club getting local community involvement, with not-for-profit organisations invited to attend and local business to get involved,” Ms Taylor said.
Ex-Brisbane Lions player Daniel Merrett will help to run a free come and try session for girls and boys of all ages, taking place at 10am.
As well as games and activities organised by Alexandra Hills JAFC and the Meteors netball club, the day will feature Dunk the Coach, which will raise funds for the Outside the Locker Room program’s campaign for awareness of mental health issues in young adults playing sport.
JAFC under 11 player Charlie will be running a boot swap drive, aiming to collect old football boots to donate to underprivileged children on his trip to Cambodia in February.
Mayor Karen Williams will officially open the Meteors’ new netball courts on Windemere Road at 12:30pm.
The Dental Project from Wellington Point will be on site for mouthguard fittings.
Ms Taylor said the event would feature traditional fete offerings including food trucks, market stalls and rides.
Both clubs would also be taking registrations for the 2019 season on the day, Ms Taylor said.
