POLICE have warned residents to make sure their windows cannot be used as entry points into homes by burglars.
Keeping garage doors cracked open was also not a good idea.
Senior Constable Bree Macdonald said there had been an increase in burglary offences across the South Brisbane police district, which includes the Redlands, throughout the summer months.
People had been leaving windows and doors open and unlocked, making it easy for intruders to enter.
“When windows and doors are left unlocked, offenders are using this as an opportunity particularly in the late afternoon/evening to break into your house,” she said.
“Police want to remind everyone to always key lock your windows and doors and close your garage completely, even when at home.”
Senior Constable Macdonald said people should make it as hard as possible for offenders to gain entry and to quickly escape.
She said key locks should be put on doors and windows, warning residents to not store keys in obvious places like under door mats.
Alarms could also be activated and property engraved.
“Property owners can greatly reduce the risk of becoming a victim of a burglary by implementing measures to improve the security of their homes,” she said.
“These measures can be simple and don’t necessarily need to cost a lot of money.”
