A LIGHTWEIGHT utility task vehicle used by police for patrols at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games last year has been delivered to Capalaba police station.
Acting Senior Sergeant Wayne Richter said the UTV would be used by Capalaba police officers to travel across parks, nature reserves and other areas which were usually accessible only by foot or bicycle.
“It will enhance high-visibility patrols to promote the community’s safety and deal with crime,” he said.
The UTV was given to Bayside Patrol earlier this year for shared use across stations, including at the Southern Moreton Bay Islands.
Acting Senior Sergeant Richter said residents in the Capalaba policing division, including at Alexandra Hills and Birkdale, might soon see police using the UTV and bicycles when out on patrols.
Sergeant David Candale said the UTV, equipped with flashing lights, could also be used by police who were on the lookout for offenders and during search-and-rescues.
“It is for use anywhere we have identified that offenders are using to bypass detection on normal roads,” he said.
