A PUBLIC orchard and planting beds are included in the design for a community garden at Redland Bay.
The garden, proposed by Redlands Coast Salad Bowl, will be at Fielding Park on School of Arts Road.
Redlands Coast Salad Bowl president Craig Luxton said initial designs showed the 4000 square metre garden containing an open orchard for the public and raised garden beds where members could grow their own food.
The community garden would be one of five in the Redlands, with others in Alexandra Hills and on Karragarra, Lamb and Russell islands.
Mr Luxton said Fielding Park was chosen from more than 42 potential sites.
He said factors like proximity to neighbours, parking, utilities and infrastructure such as toilets, parkland and barbecue areas were taken into account.
A Redland City Council spokesperson said people could comment on the project from March 1 until April 3.
"All park users and community members are encouraged to have their say on council’s Your Say site under Fielding Park - Proposed Community Garden," the spokesperson said.
"Council supports this community-led initiative and the establishment of community gardens in appropriate locations to encourage good nutrition in the community, reduce social isolation, encourage a sense of place and sharing of knowledge about food production."
Mr Luxton said the community garden would be a place where avid gardeners could bond and local groups could meet, and a retreat from the noise and commotion of the urban environment.
"(It will also) allow families and individuals without land of their own the opportunity to produce food, and provide a place for gardeners to share knowledge and skills," Mr Luxton said.
"(We can) educate the community in sustainability and establishing and maintaining food producing gardens."
Mr Luxton said he hoped the garden would be ready in time for the community to enjoy spring crops.
