WHAT is it like to be farming 24 acres of lush red soil in the midst of suburbia?
Join Redlands Organic Growers Inc members on Wednesday, March 13 to hear Wellington Point farmer Adrian Lynch talk about changing times and season to season challenges.
As part owner of the farm at Main Road, Wellington Point, Adrian has been running both retail and production seven days a week for seventeen years.
This year he has decided to have a break from retail and concentrate on production, which is what he loves to do most.
He said the reward is in overcoming challenges and successfully growing a product you can be proud of and that other people will enjoy eating.
“Growing for the flavours you remember and know, unlike the commercial varieties where it’s all about production, production, production.
“The weather this summer has been brutal. I have never known a summer with so little rain and drying winds. It has presented its own challenges in preparing the soil for planting.
"This year I will be focusing on growing tomatoes and strawberries.
“I enjoy what I do and people seem to enjoy being able to drive past the farm and see the day by day activities and how the farm changes over the course of a season.
"It feels like farming in a fish bowl sometimes."
Though Adrian has had a green thumb from a young age, he said he was always on the lookout for new ideas and better ways of producing crops.
He looked forward to exchanging a few tricks and remedies with ROGI members.
Mr Lynch will meet with ROGI on March 13 from 7pm at the Alexandra Hills Salvation Army barracks, which is at the McDonald Road and MacArthur Street.
Entry is $5 and supper is served afterwards.
