A PERSON with measles has been at Victoria Point, Cleveland and Thornlands while likely to have been infectious.
Queensland Health issued a measles alert on Thursday afternoon, saying they had been notified of a case of measles.
Metro South Health public health physician Dr Bhakti Vasant said people who had been at the locations below during the specific times needed to be alert for symptoms and should speak to their GP immediately if they were uncertain of their immunity to measles.
Locations the person visited while they were likely to be infectious are:
- Victoria Point mall, each afternoon on Saturday, February 16; Sunday, February 17 and Wednesday, February 20
- Norm Price Park, Redland Showgrounds, Cleveland on Saturday, February 16 between 5pm and 9pm
- Aldi Supermarket, Victoria Point, on the afternoon of Sunday, February 17
- Carmel College, Thornlands, on Monday, February 18 and Tuesday, February 19
- Good Life Gym, Cleveland on the afternoon of Monday, February 18
- Princess Polly Warehouse sale, Highland Park on Saturday, February 23 between 8.20am and 2.30pm.
Dr Vasant said symptoms usually started about seven to 10 days after infection but sometimes longer.
"Measles is a serious viral infection that causes fever, cough, runny nose, then a red spotty rash and sore eyes a few days later," Dr Vasant said.
"Anyone who develops measles-like symptoms within the next fortnight should contact their GP for advice."
Dr Vasant said a person with symptoms should first call their medical practice to advise staff about the possibility of having measles so staff could take precautions.
Dr Vasant said large numbers of people were potentially exposed meaning that further measles cases could present in Brisbane or elsewhere over the next two weeks.
"If people are adequately vaccinated with two recorded doses of measles mumps rubella (MMR) vaccine, they are very unlikely to get the disease," he said.
"People who are unsure or have concerns about their immunity to measles should contact their GP."
"Because of recent measles outbreaks overseas, it is particularly important for travellers to get vaccinated before leaving Australia."
