TWO Carmel College year 10 students are bound for one of the world's biggest comedy festivals.
Just one year into their comedy careers, Kyle Bennett and Carlin Carruth will perform during the Melbourne International Comedy Festival with a team of other young comedians.
The two began performing together in early 2018, taking part in the local heats of the Class Clowns competition with fellow student Liam Adam.
"The reason why we did it was mainly to get a day off school," Carlin said.
The group was first brought together in classroom drama by classmate Ben Rutberg, who is performing in the 2019 Class Clowns competition with fellow Carmel College student Keddie Liptrott.
After bowing out at the state level of the competition, Kyle, Carlin and Liam were selected as wild cards for the national grand final at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
Their act was entitled Awkward and featured skits about school scenarios ranging from wacky teachers to teenage crushes.
"We went for something that everyone can relate to because everyone has been to school," Carlin said.
Awkward won them first prize in the national competition.
Kyle and Carlin were then selected into the LOL Squad, a national team of young comedians who write and perform sketches under the mentorship of seasoned comedy professionals.
While down in Melbourne filming with the squad, Carlin and Kyle performed at Luna Park alongside comedians including Geraldine Hickey.
Now, along with the LOL Squad's best and brightest, Carlin and Kyle are preparing head down south to perform during the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in April.
"In this next one we're doing, we're singing songs," Carlin said.
"We've got one about mums and what they have to go through."
"We've got some new stuff (but) we're still living in that awkward tension," Kyle said.
To hone their skills, Carlin and Kyle perform regularly at the Powerhouse Museum in Brisbane as mid-show guests.
Carlin said he hoped the duo would continue to work together as their comedic skills developed.
"I want to be living in Melbourne acting or performing every day," he said.
"I (used to want) to be a carpenter but I thought stuff that, this is (more fun)."
