CANOES will take to the bay this weekend as part of the 11th Macleay Island Classic.
The event, hosted by the Tingira Boat Club on March 23 and 24, will see individual paddlers as well as teams circumnavigating 15 kilometres around the island.
The main event for single and double canoes will be held on Saturday, with more than $3500 on offer for winners.
Trophies and medals will also be awarded to winners in more than 65 categories relating to vessel and age.
Mayor Karen Williams will start the race and assist with the presentations.
Sunday will feature the team events, including the six person outrigger canoes paddling around the island.
A relay race will also be open to competitors, with teams of five taking on a leg each.
Tingira Boat Club commodore Neville Prosser said the Macleay Island Classic was an important event on the canoeing calendar, with competitors travelling from as far as Yeppoon and Coffs Harbour.
