A $28 million upgrade to the Rickerrt Road and Greencamp Road intersections - one of the district's most irritating peak hour bottlenecks - was opened today.
The Wakerley corridor has been a major bottleneck for years in peak hours as city-bound cars back up on both roads.
Bowman MP Andrew Laming said the upgrade would reduce congestion and improve safety and was the region's largest congestion-busting upgrade in a decade.
He said federal government and Brisbane City Council funding ensured the upgrade included Rickertt Road with the project delivered ahead of schedule and on budget.
"Formerly rated as the forth worst road in the state, there have been 57 serious crashes reported in the last seven years along this corridor and this upgrade will reduce the risk of future accidents by more than half," he said.
"This upgrade is offering immediate benefits to all road users, as well as future-proofing the corridor by delivering the infrastructure needed for our growing Redland region."
Mr Laming said collaboration between the council and federal government had delivered huge benefits for residents.
"This road upgrade has a cost benefit ratio of 8.8, which means for every dollar we have spent, there is $8.80 in dollar for dollar benefit, and more importantly will mean fewer crashes and less congestion," he said.
"I'm delighted this high-quality project to upgrade Rickertt and Green Camp Roads has been delivered, as promised to benefit Redland city residents."
