GOVERNOR-GENERAL Sir Peter Cosgrove has opened a new Sheldon College facility during what could be his last visit to the Redlands before his retirement later this year.
Sir Peter, along with wife Lady Lynne Cosgrove, visited Sheldon College on Monday, performing the ribbon cutting for the school's new ArtScapes facility.
The facility features an interactive touch-screen display, a dedicated mixed-reality lab, two art studios and a digital art lab.
ArtScapes is an extension of the $15 million LINQ (Learning and Innovation for a New Queensland) Precinct, which was opened by Sir Peter in 2015.
In an address to students, parents and dignitaries, Sir Peter said he had watched the school grow since his first visit more than a decade ago.
"Nearly 13 years ago I was first with you, so (I've seen) a generation go through (the school)," he said.
"I haven't visited any school...more than I have visited Sheldon.
"I see in the eyes and the energy of those school communities a thirst to be great."
The Governor-General also handed out awards to high-achieving students.
Year 12 student Zoe Moran won an academic award for her participation in the National Youth Science Forum and QUT Future Leaders program, while tennis player Lara Walker was recognised for her contribution to sport.
Percussionist Lehan Ling from year 9 was awarded for music and Kaelan Durham and Allison Heng won a community service award.
Sir Peter and Lady Lynne were taken on a tour of the ArtScapes facility by teachers and students, watching demonstrations of virtual reality technology and observing students at work in the art studios.
The Governor-General reminisced about his own school experiences while answering questions from year 6 students.
The guests were presented with an artwork produced by year 10 student Natasha Rees, as well as a custom-made Sheldon College jersey.
Sir Peter is due to retire in June 2019 after more than five years as Governor-General.
