VICTORIA Point councillor Lance Hewlett has been re-elected as deputy mayor of Redland City Council for a second term.
Cr Hewlett has already served one year in the position.
Councillors decided after the last local government election to review the deputy mayor position annually.
Crs Paul Gleeson and Julie Talty voted against Cr Hewlett's re-election.
All other councillors - Wendy Boglary, Peter Mitchell, Paul Golle, Mark Edwards, Murray Elliott, Tracey Huges, Paul Bishop and Karen Williams - voted for Cr Hewlett's appointment.
Cr Gleeson said he could not support Cr Hewlett as the appointment was a "stitch-up" after the election.
Cr Hewlett told the Bulletin that Cr Gleeson's comment was not based on fact and the initial appointment last year had required two rounds of voting.
"To say it was a done deal is completely unfounded," he said.
Cr Hewlett said that he was honoured to be re-elected and to represent the mayor in her absence.
In April last year Crs Talty and Gleeson left the chambers in protest during the vote.
Cr Murray Elliott said he supported Cr Hewlett's appointment.
He said Cr Hewlett had been a loyal supporter of mayor Karen Williams.
Cr Wendy Boglary was deputy mayor for the first two years after the election.
