A COUPLE and their pet dog have escaped a fire which destroyed their yacht in waters south-west of Moreton Island earlier today.
A Queensland Police Service spokesperson said the fire was not considered suspicious.
The man, 64, and woman, 53, had escaped the burning boat with their pet dog Charlie in their tender.
Police were called just after 5.30am to the yacht,which was engulfed by the time emergency services arrived.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services helped to extinguish the blaze.
The spokesperson said the couple, from Victoria, had lived on the boat.
They and their dog were taken to the Brisbane water police base by officers.
"They and Charlie were not physically injured," the spokesperson said.
"The cause of the fire is not considered suspicious and investigations are continuing."
Brisbane water police Acting Senior Sergeant Jay Bairstow said the incident was a stark reminder for boaties to check their vessels were in good working condition.
"Water Police would like to give a timely reminder for all boaties to check their vessel is in a safe and operational condition and ensure they have the required safety equipment," he said.
Acting Senior Sergeant Jay Bairstow also urged boaties venturing out to tell others about their travel details, including where they were going and when they were expected to return.
