There has been quite a few bream, javelin-fish and big tarwhine spread throughout estuary waters as a result of the rain we have had in the past month.
Most are falling to live yabbies on a run in tide but lure anglers are also reporting good catches on small hard body lures. Whiting are consistent but not in the upper reaches of rivers that are discoloured from run off. The better catches are coming from sand banks spread throughout the Broadwater and Jumpinpin.
The few mulloway reported have come from the Brisbane River, around Jumpinpin Bar and the Southport Seaway on the change of tide. There has also been a few caught at Marks Rocks in the Logan River despite the colour of the water. Large prawns have been the best bait for numbers but the bigger fish are falling to live mullet.
There are plenty of flathead skirting the banana prawn schools, quite a few have been caught in cast nets by those chasing prawns. Anglers throwing lures up into the shallows and retrieving into deeper water are also catching them, especially on the run out tide. Mud crab catches slowed up over the past few weeks but it is still worthwhile having pots in overnight. Sand crabs were the better option this week with good reports from the northern Broadwater, around the southern bay islands and along the western side of North Stradbroke Island.
As always prawns are hit and miss with the waters off Nudgee producing the lion's share this week, but all known hot spots are turning up a feed if you're there at the right time. Surf anglers are reporting chopper tailor at dawn and dusk but dart are in plague numbers on all beaches.
There has plenty of school mackerel in the Bay, they are popping up just about everywhere but the bottom of Moreton, the Sandhills, Four Beacons are all consistent producers. Offshore there has been both Spanish and spotty mackerel on the shallow grounds around Cape Moreton, Point Lookout and off the Gold Coast and fishing the bottom has turned up tuskfish and snapper.
