REDLANDS hair salons will join a worldwide hair-cutting spree in an attempt to break a world record and help people living in critical poverty.
The Colour Shak in Victoria Point and Hair Do We Do in Cleveland will take part in a global Cut-a-Thon to raise money for Hair Aid, an organisation which provides haircuts and training for people in need in Australia and overseas.
From 8am on May 26, registered salons and independent hairdressers will attempt to break the world record for the most money raised for charity in 24 hours by cutting hair.
Money raised will go towards Hair Aid's two main projects.
The Community Cuts program sees volunteers working with community organisations to offer free haircuts to people in need, including homeless people, those affected by domestic violence or others in crisis.
Ms Tomasich said a haircut could make a significant difference in the life of someone in crisis.
"It helps people get that sense of dignity and respect," she said.
Hair Aid's global project sends volunteer hairdressers to countries including the Philippines, Indonesia and Cambodia to train people living in critical poverty in hairdressing. These included women rescued from the sex trade and people living on the streets.
"The people we work with have no opportunities to access training," Ms Tomasich said.
"In five days...they have a skill that nobody can take away from them."
